Brunei Travel Guide: What to do if you want to quickly add +1 country to your travel journal 🇧🇳 All of Brunei's key locations are conveniently concentrated right in the heart of the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. Just 2–3 days is plenty of time to experience everything the country has to offer. 1. Royal Regalia Museum The Sultan of Brunei held the title of the world's richest person for many years. This museum showcases his golden chariots, ceremonial weaponry, and gifts from world leaders. Basically, it's the ultimate display of royal luxury. 2. Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque & Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas (Golden Jubilee Park) This mosque has become the main icon of the country. A pedestrian bridge leads toward it, offering a great view of its famous golden domes and the surrounding lagoon. 3. Kampong Ayer Water Village A historic "city on stilts" with cafes, schools, mosques, and homes built over the water. You can easily stroll along the wooden boardwalks (it’s easiest to enter from the northern side). 4. River Safari to Proboscis Monkeys & Crocodiles A truly unique experience: a boat takes you into the mangroves where proboscis monkeys and crocodiles live in the wild. It’s best to head out closer to sunset to maximize your chances of spotting the monkeys. ✔️ How to join: Head to the 📍Main Waterfront. Local boatmen regularly cruise by offering trips along the channels. We recommend going for the most authentic experience by hiring local wooden boats. A short sightseeing ride (along the water village) costs ~$15 per boat; an evening proboscis monkey safari costs ~$25 per boat (you can team up with other travelers on the spot to split the cost). 5. Malay Technology Museum Perfect for anyone interested in learning more about how life on the water was historically structured: from stilt-house construction techniques to traditional crafts. 6. Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum Located right next to the Technology Museum, so it's best to visit both together. It features artifacts recovered from a 15th-century Chinese shipwreck off Brunei's coast—including an incredible collection of Chinese ceramics and porcelain. 7. Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque A true architectural masterpiece! It impresses with its intricate mosaic work and manicured gardens surrounded by small fountains. 8. Tasek Lama Recreational Park An oasis of real tropical rainforest featuring a waterfall, an observation tower, and jungle trails right within the city limits. 🏨 Where to stay? Badi'ah Hotel Brunei — a solid hotel with a swimming pool, a couple of restaurants, and within walking distance of the city center and main attractions. Airport transfers are included in the rate. Since Brunei doesn't have a huge variety of hotels, we prioritized a comfortable location. 🚕 Getting around the city Public transport in Brunei is virtually non-existent. To get around the capital, download the local ride-hailing app, Dart.
