Brunei Travel Guide: What to do if you want to quickly add +1 country to your travel journal 🇧🇳
All of Brunei's key locations are conveniently concentrated right in the heart of the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. Just 2–3 days is plenty of time to experience everything the country has to offer.
1. Royal Regalia Museum
The Sultan of Brunei held the title of the world's richest person for many years. This museum showcases his golden chariots, ceremonial weaponry, and gifts from world leaders. Basically, it's the ultimate display of royal luxury.
2. Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque & Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas (Golden Jubilee Park)
This mosque has become the main icon of the country. A pedestrian bridge leads toward it, offering a great view of its famous golden domes and the surrounding lagoon.
3. Kampong Ayer Water Village
A historic "city on stilts" with cafes, schools, mosques, and homes built over the water. You can easily stroll along the wooden boardwalks (it’s easiest to enter from the northern side).
4. River Safari to Proboscis Monkeys & Crocodiles
A truly unique experience: a boat takes you into the mangroves where proboscis monkeys and crocodiles live in the wild. It’s best to head out closer to sunset to maximize your chances of spotting the monkeys.
✔️ How to join: Head to the 📍Main Waterfront. Local boatmen regularly cruise by offering trips along the channels.
We recommend going for the most authentic experience by hiring local wooden boats. A short sightseeing ride (along the water village) costs ~$15 per boat; an evening proboscis monkey safari costs ~$25 per boat (you can team up with other travelers on the spot to split the cost).
5. Malay Technology Museum
Perfect for anyone interested in learning more about how life on the water was historically structured: from stilt-house construction techniques to traditional crafts.
6. Brunei Darussalam Maritime Museum
Located right next to the Technology Museum, so it's best to visit both together. It features artifacts recovered from a 15th-century Chinese shipwreck off Brunei's coast—including an incredible collection of Chinese ceramics and porcelain.
7. Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque
A true architectural masterpiece! It impresses with its intricate mosaic work and manicured gardens surrounded by small fountains.
8. Tasek Lama Recreational Park
An oasis of real tropical rainforest featuring a waterfall, an observation tower, and jungle trails right within the city limits.
🏨 Where to stay?
Badi'ah Hotel Brunei — a solid hotel with a swimming pool, a couple of restaurants, and within walking distance of the city center and main attractions. Airport transfers are included in the rate. Since Brunei doesn't have a huge variety of hotels, we prioritized a comfortable location.
🚕 Getting around the city
Public transport in Brunei is virtually non-existent. To get around the capital, download the local ride-hailing app, Dart.

Guangzhou Checklist: What to do during a layover
In our opinion, Guangzhou isn't a city for a long vacation. There aren't that many WOW locations, making it best suited for short layovers.
✅ If you have a 6–7 hour layover:
1. Guangzhou Xuelei Fragrance Museum with an AI twist
The world's only perfume museum where you create your unique fragrance alongside artificial intelligence. You're invited to evaluate ~250 scents from around the world, and at the end, a robot crafts a personalized perfume based on your preferences.
👉🏻 Book tickets here (the museum is 20–30 minutes from the airport)
✅ If you have a 2–3 day layover:
2. Canton Tower
There are observation decks offering panoramic city views, but the main highlight is the world's highest bubble tram (ferris wheel) with transparent cabins on top of the tower (we recommend timing your visit for sunset).
👉🏻 Book a combo ticket: Observation Decks + Bubble Tram
+ Pearl River Night Cruise
Personally, we prefer admiring futuristic cities from the water rather than from above. That’s why we always recommend evening river cruises—a very popular activity in China.
👉🏻 Book your spot here
3. Scenic Tram near Canton Tower (Haizhu Tram THZ1)
The tram runs along the Pearl River from Canton Tower to the Party Pier art zone—a scenic and very budget-friendly route (~$0.50). The Party Pier area is packed with familiar European-style venues (we recommend MR.Rocky bar for great craft options, snacks, and pizza).
(Tickets can be purchased via QR code at the tram stop)
4. Shamian Island
A cozy colonial corner of Guangzhou featuring 19th-century European architecture. It’s also home to a famous Starbucks set inside a historic mansion (when we visited, it was decorated in a "Harry Potter" theme).
5. Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (Folk Arts Museum)
The architecture of the complex itself is a total masterpiece! The building is decorated with incredible wood, stone, and ivory carvings, while the inside houses a massive collection of folk art treasures.
(Tickets can be purchased at the box office on-site)
6. Liwan District (Old Guangzhou)
An atmospheric historical neighborhood filled with canals where the city's trading history began.
7. Dafo Temple
An ancient Buddhist temple hidden among bustling shopping streets. It lights up beautifully in the evening, making it a popular spot for atmospheric photos.
8. Guangzhou Orchid Garden
Featuring huge greenhouses with over 200 species of orchids, you'll find blooming varieties no matter what time of year you visit. The garden is compact and designed in a classic Chinese style—complete with ponds, bridges, and teahouses.

✅ If you're visiting Guangzhou with kids:
— Massive wildlife park 📍Chimelong Safari Park
— Oceanarium 📍Grandview Aquarium
