Phnom Penh Travel Guide

Cambodia is not overcrowded with tourists, unlike its neighbors Vietnam and Thailand, even though the country has unique historical monuments, excellent white-sand beaches, and modern developed cities. You don’t expect anything special from Cambodia, and that makes visiting it so interesting.
We especially want to mention the climate in the country. From our experience, we have never felt such hot and humid air anywhere else on Earth. For example, the weather showed +36 degrees but with a note that it feels like +46.

In Cambodia’s major cities, the Grab app is available for ordering taxis or food delivery. Follow the signs to find the pick-up point. There will be many offers from tuk-tuk drivers, but a ride in an air-conditioned taxi will be much more comfortable. Moreover, taxis in Cambodia are very cheap, while the air on the streets is filled with exhaust fumes.
Royal Park
We first recommend visiting the most beautiful complex in Phnom Penh — the Royal Park with its palace. The incredible architecture of Cambodian palaces will not leave you indifferent. They are very similar to the Thai ones, but the uniqueness of Cambodia is that this traditional architecture is used for a large number of functional buildings, not only temples.

A Horrifying Chapter in Cambodia’s History
The Khmer Rouge regime lasted from 1975 to 1979. This was one of the most tragic periods in Cambodia’s history. Under the leadership of Pol Pot, the country endured mass repression, labor camps, and famine, resulting in the deaths of around two million people. Today, the memory of the victims of that time is preserved in museums and memorials, including the S-21 prison and the Killing Fields.

Restaurants and Entertainment in Phnom Penh
In the capital of Cambodia, there are many interesting establishments offering cuisines from around the world. Of course, special attention should be paid to the local cuisine, but you can also enjoy bold and stylish restaurants from other countries.

In the capital of Cambodia, there is a whole network of modern shopping malls with a great selection of restaurants and shops. We visited them several times to escape the scorching Cambodian sun, grab a snack, and do some shopping. We recommend knowing their locations so you always have a place to rest from the heat and blazing sun.

The main attraction of Cambodia is the ancient city of Angkor, which covers a vast area with beautiful millennia-old temples. From this station, you can depart to explore the complex. The bus station has all amenities — waiting hall, ticket counters, coffee point, restroom. Buses also depart to other cities in Cambodia, including the coastal areas.
We were truly impressed by Cambodia, discovering both its rapid development in the present and its difficult history of the recent past. The country is very safe and modern. We recommend spending a few days in the capital and then traveling around the country. For example, the huge and very interesting Angkor temple complex.
To visit Cambodia, you will need to obtain an electronic visa. It can be obtained either online or upon arrival. We got ours at the airport; the whole process was very quick and cost $30 USD. Overall, there’s no real point in spending time on the e-visa in advance.
