Guide to Dushanbe

The capital of Tajikistan — a city of parks and mountains
Dushanbe is the capital of Tajikistan — a city that hides a world of Eastern warmth and hospitality behind its Soviet façade. The name itself means "Monday" in Tajik, a reminder of the weekly bazaar that once gave the settlement its identity. Today it surprises visitors with wide tree-lined boulevards, well-kept parks, and monumental Soviet-era architecture.
Dushanbe is not a noisy tourist destination, and that is precisely what makes it special. There are no crowds here, only welcoming locals and a city that moves to its own unhurried rhythm. The restaurants are excellent and prices are remarkably low compared to most Central Asian capitals.
The city is encircled by mountains on all sides, and on clear days the snow-capped peaks seem close enough to touch. This gives Dushanbe a natural beauty that is hard to find elsewhere.
Day Trips from Dushanbe
The most popular day trip from Dushanbe is Hisor Fortress, just 30 km west of the city. Dating back more than 2,500 years, it is one of the most important archaeological sites in the country. About 75 km to the east lies the Nurek Dam — the second tallest earth-fill dam in the world. For adventurous travellers, Iskanderkul Lake high in the Fan Mountains is an unforgettable destination, with its turquoise waters set amid dramatic mountain scenery.

Dushanbe is a city that rewards the curious traveller. The best time to visit is spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October), when the weather is mild and nature is at its finest. Summers are hot but ideal for mountain excursions. A trip to Hisor Fortress and the breathtaking Iskanderkul Lake are not to be missed.
